High voltage Switchyard Design and Engineering: High voltage Switchyards are required for the following purposes : 1. To receive power at high voltage for various industries and then step down to lower voltages for distribution within the plant. 2. To receive power at high voltage by one or two incoming line feeders and then distribute to several locations or downstream substations at the same voltage. This type of of substation is called switching stations. 3. To receive power supply at lower voltages and then step up to high voltage for supplying power to grid substation. This type of substation is required for power generating plants. The equipment and connections, bus bars are designed with respect to rated current flow through the feeders and bus bar. The short circuit current and duration also plays an important role in deciding the equipment and connection sizes. The clearances (phase to phase, phase to earth, sectional clearances, ground clearances are decided as per CEA guideline or national or international standards.
