Multi circuit transmission towers are nowadays used in many utilities in India to transmit electrical power from one substation to another substation or one power station to one substation. Use of multicircuit towers are limited to 220kV voltage level. The tower can have maximum 4 circuits (12 conductors of required cross section). For lightning protection of conductors, the tower may have two peaks to provide zone of protection against side stroke of lightning strike.
The benefit is considerable in using Multi circuit towers- no separate right of way is required for the two double circuit transmission lines, less cost for foundation, less hassle of obtaining clearances from Govt agencies like forest, railways, water ways, national highways and most importantly the private bodies.
The towers are designed in PLS TOWER or equivalent validated software. Alternatively the sag and tension can be prepared in PLS CADD and the wire tension along with other loads like wind load, seismic load, live loads, dead loads are applied in software like staad.pro to get the design done.Electrical clearances (phase to ground, ground clearance etc. are ensured in clearance diagrams.
SATCON has long expertise to prepare survey drawings for the transmission line route, carry out geotechnical investigation, spot the towers on google earth, doing profiling of the transmission line, sag profile, carry out complete electrical, structural and civil foundation calculations for different type of tower configurations. We have the required software to perform the entire design activity including preparing specs.
