Transformer is an oil containing equipment. The oil is flammable and hence any fire hazard in Transformer must be extinguished at the earliest to avoid damage to other adjacent equipment. Fire protection of Transformers are done in following ways :
1. Any spillage of oil must be contained in a collection pit directly below the Transformer and it must be drained away to a distant oil holding pit.
2. Any spillage of oil must be isolated from the atmospheric oxygen by providing crushed rocks on the top surface of the oil collection pit below the Transformer.
3. Nitrogen injection fire protection system is employed to fill partially the Transformer tank by inert gas like nitrogen so that internal fire initiation is blocked.
4. High velocity water spray system is employed outside the Transformer tank to extinguish fires in outside yard.
