What is a Substation :
A substation is a very important part of an Electrical power transmission and distribution network where voltage is either stepped up or stepped down. For transmitting power over a long distance, it is required to step up the voltage. After long transmission, when the transmitted power reaches the utilization side, the transmission level voltage needs to be stepped down to lower voltage levels for distribution to residential, commercial and industrial loads. A Substation can be of different types :
1. A Transformer substation where the voltage is either stepped up or stepped down.
2. A Switching station where several incoming and outgoing feeders of same voltage level gets synchronized to a common bus thus distributing the power received from one source gets distributed to several other locations.
A Substation can be either outdoor switchyard type, Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) type, Gas insulated type underground substations, Indoor type substations with metalclad switchgears, Pole mounted outdoor substations, Mobile substation etc.
